Lagavulin 16

lagavulin-16yo.jpgIt isn't every day that the authors of this blog get to indulge in a model of perfection like the Lagavulin 16 year. This challenging, classic malt is from one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Originating by the sea of Islay, this single malt showcases the best that the region has to offer.

On the nose, one will sense a strong musk, with lingering smoke, salt and peat and a finish of black licorice and the brief undercurrent of black smoke and singed rubber.

Once the elixir hits the tongue, all four taste zones are attacked by flavour. The oral orgasm presents a prominent peat through the nose with sweet roasted almond flavouring on the sides of the tongue and a wine-like woodiness down the throat.

As the drink gets to its finish, the peat & smoke take prominence leading into menthol vapour slowly returning to the almond and giving way to burnt caramel while dwindling back to the peat & smoke.

Proving that age can sustain, or even improve, the satisfaction of a fine life, the Lagavulin 16 comes highly recommended for those nights that demand something special.
